Big Ten power rankings after Week 6 saw Michigan State upset Michigan and Penn State, Wisconsin and Ohio State keep winning.
It wouldn’t be the college football season without a little bit of chaos. While Iowa State vs. Oklahoma was far and away the biggest upset of Week 6, Michigan State vs. Michigan wasn’t that far behind. However, anyone who knew how bad the Wolverines were on offense, combined with how good the Spartans have looked on defense, shouldn’t have been too shocked by the outcome.
Not only has Jim Harbaugh not been good enough as Michigan’s head coach, his record against Brady Hoke is very unflattering. Through their first 31 games, they both went 24-7, but Hoke was 2-2 against Michigan State and Ohio State — Harbaugh is 1-4. Hoke also won a New Years’ Six bowl in his first season, something Harbaugh has yet to accomplish.
Perhaps this narrative will change once Harbaugh finally beats Ohio State, and once Michigan plays under his own quarterback. But until then, he’ll always be the coach who fails to show up for big games. But enough about the Paul Bunyan trophy. Let’s get to everything else that happened around the Big Ten.
Rutgers was the only team that didn’t play in Week 6. But even with Illinois’ heavy loss to Iowa, nobody was able to demonstrate that they were worse than Chris Ash’s team. At least Illinois managed to put up 16 more points than them.
So far, Illinois have looked awful in the Big Ten portion of the schedule. But while they were held out of the end zone against Nebraska, they were able to find it against Iowa. However, all of their offense came from their kicker and their running game. Jeff George Jr. was downright abysmal, throwing for three interceptions and a completion percentage under 50. You would’ve thought Lovie Smith would be able to recruit a competent quarterback by now.
