College Football Results Against The Spread Week 6 2017

We had 57 FBS vs. FBS games over our college football weekend. That was the most games on a weekend this year, so hopefully I kept my strong start going!

More from College Football Odds

I only ended up with 38 points in college football Pick Em last week, mostly thanks to Michigan and Florida both losing. They were both in my top five picks in Pick em.

Everyone had a rough week. bodog03 led the group with 46 points this week. I fell back into sixth place with my subpar week. pitt2534 still leads the way with 279 points this season. I have 263.

Here we will recap my picks against the spread. The winner against the spread will be in BOLD. My result will follow. Let’s get to it!

Arkansas State(-7.5) at Georgia Southern: HIT! The Eagles had no real answer to Justice Hansen, as I thought would be the case.

Louisville(-3.5) at North Carolina State: MISS! Louisville continues to make their case for most overrated team award. They aren’t alone. That club already has USC and Michigan and added Chokelahoma to the ranks last week.

Memphis(-13.5) at Connecticut: HIT! The Tiger offense proved what they are capable of if they are lucky enough to draw a team without a defense.

Boise State(-8.5) at BYU: HIT! The Broncos sent BYU to their first 0-5 start since 1970. It’s a rough season for BYU, and they likely will miss their first bowl in 14 years.

Iowa State at Oklahoma(-31.5): MISS! Okay, there is being wrong, then there is what I was. How was I supposed to know that Chokelahoma would show up and lose to a 32 point dog at home with a backup quarterback? I knew after the Baylor game that teams that could pass were going to rack up a ton of points on Oklahoma. I never could have imagined that the secondary was this bad. Oklahoma was walking around acting like they couldn’t possibly lose this game. Iowa State adjusted at halftime and completely dominated after the break. They showed up. In the process, that huge win over Ohio State means nothing for the Sooners right now.

Wake Forest at Clemson(-21.5): HIT! I think the only reason I got this game was because Kelly Bryant left with a leg injury in the third quarter. Wake was able to make it a little more respectable after that.

Penn State(-13.5) at Northwestern: HIT! Can you honestly say that there are two teams out there that are unequivocally better than Penn State right now? Bama has a case, but I don’t know that Clemson does. You could call them 2a and 2b in my book right now.

Mississippi at Auburn(-23.5): MISS! This should have been an easy win until the Auburn defense gave up 20 second half points.

Georgia(-17.5) at Vanderbilt: HIT! Georgia is giving all SEC East fans hope that the east team could be more than a practice for the playoffs for Alabama. I’m just glad that Georgia and Bama don’t play during the regular season this year.

Temple(-2.5) at East Carolina MISS! The worst statistical defense in FBS strikes again. There really isn’t any excuse to give up 34 at home to Temple.

Tulsa at Tulane(-4.5): MISS! What a dominant performance by the Tulane offense. This was impressive.

Eastern Michigan at Toledo(-13.5): HIT! This was a great game, just like I expected. The Eagles are making me money right now even though they are just 2-3 on the season. They are a better team that Vegas gives them credit for.

Illinois at Iowa(-16.5): HIT! It is going to be a very long season for Illinois, but those 45 freshman will come around in a year or two. This is going to be a pretty strong team so long as Lovie can keep his job in the meantime.

Texas Tech(-15.5) at Kansas: HIT! Texas Tech is largely flying under the radar right now. That is going to change this week. One way or another, they are leaving an impression in Morgantown.

Duke at Virginia(-2.5): MISS! I probably should have went with the home team in what looked like a toss up game. Hopefully those of you that chose to bet this did so.

Pittsburgh at Syracuse(-3.5): MISS! I will say that Pitt is playing much better than they did early on. Ben Dinucci was actually more efficient running the offense that Max Browne was. Keep that in mind if you are betting the Pitt game this week with Dinucci starting.

Central Michigan at Ohio(-10.5): MISS! Well, okay Central Michigan. Where was this earlier in the season? Shane Morris had a solid game here. The Chippewas might be good enough now to play spoiler in the MAC.

Bowling Green at Miami(OH)(-15.5): MISS!  This line actually closed at 17 in places. The Falcons offense is starting to come around, racking up 70 points in two games after scoring just 47 in the first four combined. This defense is good enough to swing the season for the Falcons.

Louisiana-Monroe(-6.5) at Texas State: HIT! There is money to be made in the Sun Belt if you know where to look. Picking the Bobcats to get covered is a good place to start.

Florida International at Middle Tennessee State(-9.5): HIT! John Urzua is proving to be a capable player in this offense. He doesn’t have the upside of Stockstill, but the Blue Raiders are still rolling towards a bowl, even with Stockstill out.

West Virginia at TCU(-13.5): HIT! This was the good game I expected it to be. The TCU defense had some problems with Will Grier and company in this one. Grier had 20 incompletions in 45 attempts, but racked up 366 passing yards.

Miami(FL)(-2.5) at Florida State: HIT! This was a lot closer than I thought it would be. Truth be told, I think the Seminoles mostly outplayed Miami in this one.

Notre Dame(-14.5) at North Carolina: HIT! The Tarheels are in a heap of trouble right now. John Papuchis has not been able to pick up where Gene Chizik left off. Chizik’s defense propelled the Tarheels to an 8-3 start last year before dropping the last two. The Heels need to win five of six down the stretch to make a bowl this year. They still play three ranked teams. It’s not looking good in Chapel Hill right now.

LSU at Florida(-1.5): MISS! The Gators just dropped a game in the Swamp to a team that lost to Troy at home last week. Florida’s offense shouldn’t be anywhere near this bad. I don’t care how little Malik Zaire knows of this offense, he should at least get a shot. He can’t be any worse. My only question now is: What does McElwain have to do to keep his job? He looks like a lame duck right now.

Minnesota at Purdue(-3.5): HIT! The Gophers got out to a good start here, but were blown off the field after the lengthy weather delay.

New Mexico State at Appalachian State(-13.5): MISS! That is two straight games that the Aggies have been covered now. Has Vegas shifted to far the other way when handicapping them?

Ball State at  Akron(-6.5): HIT! This was as easy as money gets in the MAC!

Air Force at Navy(-7.5): MISS! I kind of thought this would happen. The service academies really step it up against each other.

Kent State at Northern Illinois(-23.5): HIT! The Huskies have a really sound defense, but the offense isn’t quite there yet.

Western Michigan(-6.5) at Buffalo: MISS! Never mind that I lost this bet. What a game! This was one of the best games I have ever seen! It had something for everyone! A player’s sister even got kicked out of the game for rushing on to the field to hug her brother after he scored what she thought was the winning touchdown! You can’t make this stuff up! That is why college football is so great!

Maryland at Ohio State(-30.5): MISS! The Buckeyes continue to destroy everything in their paths, but they still make a lot of little mistakes. They are one of the sloppiest offenses I’ve seen despite all the talent. When they run into a good defense, things will get interesting.

Oregon State at USC(-33.5): HIT! If Oregon State were any good, USC would have had to sweat this one. The Beavers forced two turnovers inside USC’s own 30 in the first quarter and had nothing to show for it.

Arkansas(-2.5) at South Carolina: MISS! Is Bret Bielema feeling the flames of the Arkansas boosters? If he isn’t, he should be! As may as four SEC teams could be looking for new coaches this winter.

Louisiana Tech(-10.5) at UAB: HIT! I was wrong on one count. UAB did win outright!

Colorado State(-8.5) at Utah State: HIT! Lost in the offensive success of Colorado State is just how good that defense has been.

Louisiana at Idaho(-6.5): MISS! I know that the Idaho coaching staff is okay with the move to FCS, but it seems odd for a team that made a bowl last year and has been favored in most of their games this year to make the drop. I could name a dozen other teams that should drop before the Vandals.

Marshall(-14.5) at Charlotte: MISS! What? Uh…..nice defense I guess considering the Herd only scored 14 points…..

Florida Atlantic(-4.5) at Old Dominion: HIT! Apparently Lane Kiffin took a page out of the Wisconsin playbook. The Owls scored a staggering eight touchdowns on the ground, including four by quarterback Jason Driskel. Does the name sound familiar? It should. His brother had some success at Florida and more at Louisiana Tech.

Army(-12.5) at Rice: HIT! Army forced six turnovers in this one and just ran Rice into the ground. Not that any of were really surprised by that.

Georgia State at Coastal Carolina: MISS! This was a tough loss for CCU at home, but you have to give credit to the Panther defense. They held Malcolm Williams to just 55 yards after he racked up 266 against Monroe last week.

AUSTIN, TX – OCTOBER 07: Chris Warren III #25 of the Texas Longhorns dives for a touchdown in the second quarter defended by Denzel Goolsby #20 of the Kansas State Wildcats at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on October 7, 2017 in Austin, Texas. (Photo by Tim Warner/Getty Images) /

SMU at Houston(-6.5)HIT! Houston still has a lot of offensive talent even with Greg Ward gone. And if Ed Oliver gets back to 100%, look out!

Kansas State at Texas(-5.5): HIT! Did you see the game winning touchdown in the second overtime for Texas? That was a man’s run by Chris Warren and friends. I say friends because his offensive line shoved him into the end zone whether he wanted to go or not. That is the difference between 2016 and 2017 Texas. This team is physical where they lost that edge under Charlie Strong.

Southern Mississippi at UTSA(-12.5): MISS! Ito Smith – remember him? – ran for 178 yards, including 89 on one play. Smith was one of my favorite small school backs last year. He has been mired in obscurity in Hattiesburg this year because the Eagles are largely terrible, but maybe he can build on this one.

Alabama(-26.5) at Texas A&MHIT! This game was way too close for comfort from Alabama’s standpoint. Kyle Field is a tough place to play, but this A&M defense clamped down on this offensive juggernaut in the second half. This should almost count as a win for the Aggies. They played a strong game.

Virginia Tech(-16.5) at Boston College: HIT! Virginia Tech’s defense gained some much-needed confidence back after being gouged by Clemson.

Mississippi at Alabama(-28.5): HIT! I knew that Alabama wanted revenge here. This was an absolute stomping and showed what the Tide are capable of.

Michigan State at Michigan(-10.5): MISS! The deluge in Ann Arbor took away the effectiveness of John O’Korn. The Michigan State secondary forced him into way to many mistakes. The fact that Michigan was even in this game is a testament to their defense.

Missouri at Kentucky(-9.5): MISS! Well, it’s nice to know that Drew Lock is still on the team. Wait……isn’t Mark Stoops supposed to be a defensive guy?

Fresno State(-16.5) at San Jose State: HIT! This was a microcosm of the San Jose State program right now. I’m not sure they could beat any FBS school….

Wisconsin(-10.5) at Nebraska: HIT! I have to hand it to Wisconsin. They didn’t care about running the same play 20 times in a row. They did it because Nebraska was powerless to stop it. That defense was gassed when the fourth quarter began. With the way the Nebraska offense failed to move the ball in the second half, they are lucky the defense didn’t pass out on the field.

Washington State(-2.5) at Oregon: HIT! This was easy money. I can’t believe that people actually thought Oregon could stay close!

Central Florida(-16.5) at Cincinnati: HIT! In just two years, Scott Frost has taken UCF from a winless team to likely ten wins. No wonder Nebraska fans want him back.

Western Kentucky(-17.5) at UTEP: MISS! So much for the WKU offense. I knew they weren’t nearly as potent as last year, but is this what they have come to? Only able to score 15 points on a beleaguered UTEP defense?

Arizona at Colorado(-6.5): MISS! How bad is Colorado’s defense? Khalil Tate broke a FBS record for rushing yards by a quarterback (327) in this one, breaking the mark of Northern Illinois’s Jordan Lynch. And he did it on just 14 carries!

Stanford(-3.5) at Utah: MISS! That stupid half got me again. Does holding Bryce Love to under 200 yards count as good defense?

Hawaii(-3.5) at Nevada: HIT! Rarely have I seen a team as undisciplined as Hawaii was in thiis one. Just look at the sequence at the end of the first half. Five penalties for 75 yards in a minute of game time. There really isn’t any excuse for that.

California at Washington(-28.5): MISS! Sorry, I guess Cal really is that bad.

San Diego State(-9.5) at UNLV: HIT! It was an emotional night in Vegas, and I do wish that UNLV hadn’t run into such a good team so they could have given the city a win.

I had another solid week of picks at 32-25 on the week. That puts my season total at 170-137. My win percentage crept up to a 55.4% success rate. That may not seem like much, but my goal was 55% before the season. That tells how difficult this can be. Let’s see if I gained some more points!

This week’s totals follow the number. The season totals are in parentheses.

1. 6-4 (26-24) = 2
2. 11-6 (56-45) = 22
3. 7-9 (54-35) = 57
4. 5-5 (19-24) = -20
5. 3-0 (15-9) = 30

I gained another 21 points this week to put my season winnings at 91. That’s a solid bankroll as conference play gets into full swing. I am now up to 51 betting points in two and a half seasons. I finally hit all of my five pointers! Hopefully all of you had a strong week as well!
