Los Angeles Dodgers: Trade for Giancarlo Stanton

There are only a few teams in the league with the prospects and financial means to make a trade for Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton. We already touched on the Red Sox as one potential landing spot for MLB’s home-run king. Boston might have to pull from their current MLB roster to get Stanton. The Cubs also have a treasure trove of young talent and the cash, but Theo Epstein will be hesitant to trade Kyle Schwarber or Ian Happ.

That could leave the Dodgers as the last team standing if the Stanton sweepstakes really heat up. Los Angeles still has one of the best farm systems in the league, headlined by Walker Buehler and Alex Verdugo. Joc Pederson should still draw interest on the trade market because he is young enough and has potential. Overall, the Dodgers have six prospects on MLB’s top-100 list, not including Julio Urias.

The Dodgers can afford to pay Stanton, they have the prospects necessary to entice the Marlins and they have the draw as Stanton’s hometown team. He still lives in Los Angeles during the offseason. Stanton has a full no-trade clause in his contract with the Marlins, so he will be involved in the process if he does hit the trade block.

This postseason will dictate how aggressive the Dodgers need to be this winter. Andrew Friedman has always been reluctant to trade his top prospects, but the Dodgers have to win a World Series before Clayton Kershaw gets to go out on the open market. Stanton is the big bat the Dodgers have been missing during their current dominance of the NL West.
