One offseason move each MLB team needs to make
Miami Marlins: Trade Giancarlo Stanton
The new ownership group in Miami, led by Derek Jeter, has been coy about their plans for Giancarlo Stanton. His contract is about to get a lot more expensive and he has been on the record about not wanting to continue playing for a losing franchise. It’s a Catch-22 for the Marlins as they have some of the pieces in place to win, but don’t have the finances to build the roster up to contending status.
Trading Stanton makes the most sense for the Marlins. Moving him for an elite haul of prospects or a group of young players who have already established themselves at the MLB level would give the new ownership group a chance to begin molding the roster with their own vision and direction.
Stanton has done a lot in Miami, but he has not been able to carry the team back to the playoffs, let alone a winning record. The Marlins have a weak farm system and a disinterested fanbase. They need to start from scratch with homegrown, cheap players.
There was never any way that Stanton would play all 13 years of his $325-million deal with the Marlins. It’s only a matter of time now before he is traded. For the new owners, this offseason makes the most sense. His value will never be higher, and this is the time to make a clean break instead of prolonging the inevitable.
