Wait, could every team in the Western Conference be better this year (except the Clippers)?

With the NBA regular season now less than a week away, it is time for the third annual Fastbreak Breakfast “Butter or Parkay?” previews. (If you missed last week’s Eastern Conference episode, it is available here and fair warning: it is bleak.) It seems every year most franchises and fanbases think their team has improved in the offseason. Whether through free agent signings, drafting promising rookies, or expecting internal development, optimism abounds.

This is very much the case in the Western Conference, where even the bad teams (Suns, Kings, Lakers) feel confident they’ve increased their talent. Even the Jazz, who lost Gordon Hayward and George Hill, can talk themselves into believing that a leap from Rudy Gobert, a Donovan Mitchell breakout and playing Moneyball might lead them to not missing a beat.

So with a constant embrace of breakfast puns, we examine every team in the West and the moves they made and ask the very simple question:

Are they butter…..er, better? Or are they Parkay….just an imitation, and definitely not butter. I mean, better.

All Fastbreak Breakfast episodes are also available for download on iTunes and Soundcloud.
