The New York Yankees beat the Houston Astros 5-0 in Game 5 of the 2017 ALCS in New York.

In a rematch of the Game 1 starters, it was Masahiro Tanaka who got the best of the Astros this time. Finally, the Yankees were able to rock Dallas Keuchel as the Bronx Bombers cruised to a shutout win. Thanks to an impressive performance at the plate and an incredible outing from Tanaka, New York is now one win away from the World Series.

For much of the series, the Yankees’ early-inning hits had all come with two outs. Therefore, the Bronx Bombers failed to get anything going. That trend was broken by Greg Bird, who singled to score Starlin Castro and give the Yankees a 1-0 lead in the second. Meanwhile, Tanaka continued to get out of jams and silence the Astros offense. Aaron Judge’s bat came alive early on, as well. The Yankees rookie ripped a RBI double by Astros third-baseman Alex Bregman to give put New York up by two.

Keuchel’s struggles continued into the fifth inning when he issued a two-out walk to Judge, which put two men on for Gary Sanchez. The 24-year-old delivered yet another clutch hit, scoring Headley, which was New York’s third run. For the first time this series, the Yankees jumped on Keuchel. The Astros ace was promptly pulled following a Didi Gregorius RBI single. All in all, Keuchel gave up four runs in the 4.2 innings he threw.

To close out the game, Sanchez put the cherry on top with a late solo shot. The Yankees bullpen continued to impress as they shut out the Astros for the first time in the series and have now taken a 3-2 series lead.

Three Stars

  1. Masahiro Tanaka: 7IP, 3H, 0ER, 1BB, 8K. Nothing else needs to be said about Tanaka. All things considered, he was simply unbelievable.
  2. Gary Sanchez: “The Kraken” delivered in the clutch once again early on, and put the finishing touches on the Astros with a homer in the seventh.
  3. Aaron Judge: Judge’s RBI double in the third and score in the fifth broke the game open and added insurance to Tanaka’s phenomenal night.
