Vin Scully’s World Series Game 2 ceremonial first pitch was the best

It looked as if Vin Scully was set to throw out the first pitch prior to Game 2 of the World Series on Wednesday, and while he didn’t, it was still the best

For years, Vin Scully has entertained not just Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers fans, but all of us baseball fans. Quite possibly, the man is the greatest of all time in terms of getting behind a microphone to call a baseball game, and sadly, he called it a career following last season.

However, with the Dodgers in the World Series against the Houston Astros, Scully made his return to Dodger Stadium for Game 2 on Wednesday night for what we believed was his ceremonial first pitch. And while Scully actually never tossed the ball to the plate, it was still one of the best sports moments of the year.

Scully walked out to the mound with a mic in hand to narrate what we assumed was that first pitch, which we all thought was just great in itself. But, he realized he couldn’t throw out the first pitch if there was no catcher behind the plate. Well, that brought out Steve Yeager, who played for the organization from 1972-85.

We weren’t done there.

Sadly, when Scully pulled back his arm to make the pitch, he was gracious enough to inform us all that he had done something to his rotator cuff. It was time to make a call to the bullpen. So, which lefty did he bring out of the pen?

Why, of course, it was Fernando Valenzuela, bringing “FernandoMania” back to Dodger Stadium for the World Series once again.

This was, without question, one of the best moments of this entire baseball season, as well as one of the best things we will see in all of sports in 2017.

We’re all better off still having Vin Scully in our lives in some form or fashion, and we were reminded of that on Wednesday evening.
