Warriors coach Steve Kerr had some pretty clear opinions about LGBTQ night at Oracle Arena last night.

The Warriors hosted the Toronto Raptors Wednesday night and also hosted an LGBTQ night at the game, an effort to make the gay and lesbian community feel welcome within the larger community of Warriors’ and NBA fans. This can be a bit of a touchy subject and there are plenty of organizations in sports that won’t host these nights because of the (unfair) blowback they receive.

The Golden State coach talked about hosting the LGBTQ night and had a pretty great response.

Frankly, this is a breath of fresh air that a coach would say this instead of just trying to walk a line and keep all the fans happy. Trying to use the platform of being involved in a major sport and one of the most popular teams on the planet to bring people together is fantastic. The things that Kerr and the Warriors say and do carry extra weight with people. Choosing to send this message of acceptance and being a good person to your fellow human beings is great to see. He’s not advocating any particular lifestyle, just an “everybody love everybody” approach to interacting with your fellow humans.

Kerr and San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich have been very outspoken these past few months about a lot of things happening in the political arena. That can be a difficult path to walk considering it could easily alienate fans who had a different opinion. Hosting an LGBTQ evening runs the same risk.

Kerr has proven before that he will say exactly what he thinks and not care if anyone agrees with him. He demonstrated that again Wednesday and it will certainly not be the last time it happens.
