On Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field, the San Francisco 49ers fell to the Philadelphia Eagles. What did we learn from this Week 8 match-up?

The hottest team in the NFL was looking to make it six straight wins on Sunday. All the Philadelphia Eagles had to do was knock off one of two winless teams in the league entering Week 8. Losers of eight consecutive contests dating back to last season, the San Francisco 49ers were coming off a humbling 40-10 loss to the Dallas Cowboys at Levi’s Stadium.

Now all Kyle Shanahan’s squad had to do is slow down a quarterback that’s thrown at least three touchdown passes in three straight games. In just his second season, Eagles’ signal-caller Carson Wentz looks like a Pro Bowler and even a very-early NFL MVP candidate (emphasis on very early).

So what happened when the Niners took the field in Philadelphia on Sunday afternoon? A lot of very bad things for Shanahan’s team in a 33-10 loss.

Highlights

Three Stars

1. Carson Wentz

It was a sterling effort, but the second-year pro hit on 18 of his 32 throws for 211 yards and a pair of scores (1 interception) as the Eagles rolled to a sixth straight victory.

2. Mychal Kendricks

Fortunately for this team, the Birds have hung onto this guy. He totaled seven tackles and one sack in the convincing victory. The 49ers were limited to 238 total yards and 10 points on the afternoon.

3. Derek Barnett

Yes, teammate and cornerback Jalen Mills did return a C.J. Beathard interception 37 yards for a touchdown. But it was the Eagles’ 2017 first-round pick that came up big several times in the Birds’ victory. He finished with two tackles and blocked a field goal in the 33-10 victory.

Odds

The 49ers were one of two winless teams heading into Sunday’s action with the club owning the best record in the NFL. And that’s the biggest reason at the Eagles were a huge 14-point favorite to hand the 49ers a ninth consecutive loss dating back to last season. And that 47.5 over/under was largely built on Philadelphia’s offensive firepower.

Next Week

The San Francisco 49ers return home and for the second time this season face the struggling Arizona Cardinals, who were idle in Week 8. On the other hand, the Philadelphia Eagles have a third straight home game as they take on the Denver Broncos, who will be coming off a Monday night clash with the Chiefs.
