Somehow, Travis Benjamin’s safety wasn’t the worst play of the season

Chargers punt returner and MENSA candidate Travis Benjamin turned in one of the worst plays you’ll see all season long.

There have been some bad plays in the NFL this year, but Travis Benjamin is coming for the title. You’ve probably seen the play a thousand times, but it’s now time to determine whether or not it is actually the worst play of the season.

As inexplicable as the safety was, Benjamin’s boneheaded display of nincompoopery deserves a few different viewings just to appreciate how glorious it is.

Just watch, and try to figure out what was going through his head.

Here are a few options:

  • He was auditioning for a spot on the Patriots and wanted to sweeten the deal by giving them points.
  • It’s lunchtime, so maybe he got distracted by the smell of that fine Massachusettes cuisine.
  • Obligatory “he was thinking about the betting line” because apparently, we all turn into 40-year old gamblers when sports are on

Frankly, there’s no logical way to wrap our heads around what Benjamin was thinking. The only thing we can do is wonder if this was the worst play of the season or if Marcus Cooper’s fumble was.

As a refresher, Cooper was the Bears player a few weeks ago who scooped up a blocked field goal and returned it almost all the way. As he celebrated a touchdown he didn’t score, the Steelers forced a fumble. Classic.

Part of me wants to say the Cooper play was the worst, but the Bears at least ended up winning that game. Benjamin’s safety was the kind of lapse in judgment that makes the difference between beating the Patriots on the road and losing by that much.
