World Series Game 5, Astros vs. Dodgers: Highlights, recap and more

The Houston Astros took Game 5 of the 2017 World Series with a big 13-12 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers to claim a 3-2 series lead.

Game 5 of the 2017 World Series was a battle of wits as both teams traded high scoring innings to take the lead, forcing extra innings as the Dodgers tied the game in the 9th inning to keep going. In the end it was the Astros who claimed a 13-12 victory over the Dodgers.

Things got started quickly with a big 1st inning for the Dodgers. Dallas Keuchel loaded up the bases after allowing two walks, and it gave Logan Forsythe the opportunity for a clutch 2-RBI single that brought in Chris Taylor and Justin Turner. Kiké Hernandez advanced to 3rd base, and on the next play Forsythe stole 2nd base and a throwing error from Yuli Gurriel scored Hernandez. The Dodgers ended the inning up 3-0.

In the top of the 4th inning Austin Barnes had an RBI single to left field that scored Forsythe and brought the score to 4-0 Dodgers.

But the Astros had a few runs up their sleeve in the bottom of the 4th inning as their bats came alive. Carlos Correa got on the board with an RBI double, followed by Gurriel’s 3-run blast to left field. By the end of the inning the game was knotted at 4-4.

The Astros’ lead didn’t last long. Cody Bellinger had a 3-run homer of his own to score Corey Seager and Turner, giving the Dodgers a little breathing room at 7-4. After Kershaw left the game with two runners on base, Kenta Maeda’s fastball was ripe for Jose Altuve’s picking and he sent a blast to left field for a 3-run homer of his own to tie the game at 7-7.

The go ahead run came in the top of the 7th inning when Bellinger delivered a triple to drive in Kiké Hernandez. 8-7 Dodgers, but not for long. George Springer added a solo home run in the Astros’ 7th to tie the game at 8-8. Altuve’s RBI double scored Alex Bregman, and then Correa added a 2-run homer to make it 11-8 Astros.

In the 8th inning, Seager’s RBI double scored Joc Pederson, and then Houston’s Brian McCann hit a solo shot to make it 12-9 Astros.

With the game on the line, Yasiel Puig sent a 9th inning blast to left field to bring in Bellinger and make it 12-11 Astros. Taylor’s single scored Austin Barnes to tie the game at 12-12.

Heading into extra innings, the Astros held the Dodgers scoreless in the 10th. The Astros had two runners on base for Alex Bregman, whose drop in single scored Derek Fisher for the win.

Houston’s starting pitcher Dallas Keuchel (Pre-Game 5: 14-5, 2.90 ERA, 125 K) came out of the game after only 3.2 innings of work, allowing 5 hits and 4 runs. Kershaw (Pre-Game 5: 18-4, 2.31 ERA, 202 K) )left the game after 4.2 innings and 94 pitches. He allowed 4 hits and 6 earned runs with only 2 strikeouts on the night.

Carlos Correa, SS, Astros: Carlos Correa had a spectacular night. His RBI double in the 4th inning put the Astros on the board, and then his 2-run homer in the 7th inning helped to extend the Astros’ lead.

The Dodgers’ Bats: Credit where credit is due. The Dodgers fought for this game and it was their red-hot bats that kept them in the race. The Dodgers got on the board first, scoring 4 runs in the 1st inning. They followed with two 3-run homers and kept their bats hot all night long. Though they didn’t pull off the win, the Dodgers managed to keep pace in this game, making it clear that this series isn’t over yet.

The Astros’ Bats: Just when things looked bleak for the Astros, with starter Dallas Keuchel leaving the game earlier than anticipated, the Astros remained focused and kept the pressure on Los Angeles with two 3-run homers of their own. Adding runs in groups of 3 is a great way to rattle the competition and get the win. In the end, the Astros stayed ahead and took advantage of the Dodgers’ sluggish bullpen to pull off the win.

Game 6 of the 2017 World Series takes place on Tuesday, October 31. It’s Halloween night and the Dodgers need to scare up a big Game 6 win to stay alive in the World Series.

The Dodgers return home to Los Angeles to face the Houston Astros in the friendly confines of Dodgers Stadium. The Dodgers have Rich Hill (LHP, 12-8, 3.32 ERA, 166 K) on the mound while the Astros have Justin Verlander (RHP, 15-8, 3.36, 219 K) with the start.

Game 6 will have an 8pm ET start time and the game will be broadcast on FOX.
