Trevor Siemian has finally played his way out of the starting job, and the Denver Broncos have to think about a quarterback switch.

Over the last three games, all losses, Denver Broncos quarterback Trevor Siemian has just two touchdown passes while accounting for seven turnovers. Things came to a head Monday night against the Kansas City Chiefs, with three interceptions and a couple of inexplicable throws, and Broncos head coach Vance Joseph wavered from his prior firm commitment to Siemian as the starting quarterback after the game.

The schedule remains tough for the Broncos going forward, with the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots coming in the next two weeks. The defense is still top-notch, and the running game got on track Monday night with 177 yards on the ground, so Siemian’s mistakes stood out in a 10-point loss to the Chiefs.

With their playoff chances on the ropes, the Broncos are at least thinking about a change under center.

Brock Osweiler came back to the Broncos late in the preseason, after being cut by the Cleveland Browns, and he has attempted four passes as Siemian’s backup so far this season. As Ian Rapoport of NFL Network alluded to, 2016 first-round pick Paxton Lynch recently returned to practice after suffering a shoulder injury in Denver’s third preseason game. He has also been beaten out by Siemian for the starting job in each of the last two preseasons, which raises its own set of questions. That said, if healthy, Lynch has to be an option to start if he’s healthy enough to do so.

It’s one thing to not be a prolific passer, and another to put your team behind the eight-ball with turnovers. With three touchdowns and eight interceptions over the last five games, while only topping 260 yards through the air once in that span, Siemian has played his way out of the starting job. It’s just up to Joseph to have the guts to make the change, even with a lack of great options to go to.
