Houston Texans fear quarterback Deshaun Watson suffered a torn ACL after a non-contact injury at practice.

Deshaun Watson, who seemed to be on the path to win Rookie of the Year, might have his season cut short in an unexpected way. Watson reportedly suffered a non-contact knee injury at Texans practice, and the team fears he will miss the rest of the season.

It’s unclear whether the injury is as severe as it is initially feared. Either way, this is the last thing anyone wanted to hear and was hardly the way we thought Watson’s phenomenal rookie campaign would end.

Ian Rapoport was the first to report the devastating news.

UPDATE: As it turns out, Watson indeed tore his ACL.

If this is the way Watson’s year ends, it’s devastating on more than one level. No player was single handily leading his team like Watson was, taking Houston from being a team that was going in the wrong direction to making them playoff contenders.

Even with a season-ending injury to J.J. Watt, fans had faith that Watson would be able to lead them. To his credit, Watson gave them a chance that didn’t exist without him on the field. Two signature games in his rookie year saw him go on the road against New England and Seattle and nearly win. Watson ran wild over the Legion of Boom and almost corralled a win.
