After defeating the Penn State Nittany Lions, the Michigan State Spartans might just be the best team in the Big Ten Conference.

Crazy weather and a delay highlighted the day in East Lansing on Saturday. Michigan State again proved to be the upset artists that they are and they ended the College Football Playoff chances for the Penn State Nittany Lions.

With the victory, the Michigan State Spartans have taken over first in the Big Ten East. The Ohio State Buckeyes losing to the Iowa Hawkeyes in blowout fashion allowed the Spartans to assume command once again.

Michigan State has two huge victories on the season with wins over Michigan and Penn State now. Defeating Ohio State would pretty much clinch them the division and set them up with a spot in the title game. Here’s why they’ll win the Big Ten.

3. Their defense is proven

The Michigan defense is one of the best in college football on a consistent basis. Yards have to be earned against them and they don’t give up a lot of points. If a team does defeat the Spartans, it’s typically an ugly win.

In the Big Ten, the team with the stout defense usually wins and that’s what the Spartans can boast right now. Keeping the game close allows their offense to stay loose and not have to worry about having to do more than they’re capable of.

If they’re going to win the conference, it’s going to be because of the effort of co-defensive coordinators, Mike Tressel and Harlon Barnett. The duo has had their defense ready to play for every big game they have.
