Chiefs at Cowboys: Highlights, score and recap

On Sunday afternoon, the Kansas City Chiefs lost to the Dallas Cowboys. What did we learn from this Week 9 interconference clash?

A season ago, the Dallas Cowboys earned the top seed in the NFC playoffs thanks in part to rookie running back Ezekiel Elliott and his league-best 1,631 yards on the ground. Eight full weeks into the 2017 campaign, the 6-2 Kansas Chiefs are tied for the best record in the AFC. And rookie running back Kareem Hunt has racked up an NFL-best 763 yards on the ground.

So which defense stepped to the forefront on Sunday afternoon when Andy Reid’s club invaded AT&T Stadium? Entering Week 9, only four teams were giving up more rushing yards per game than the Chiefs. Dallas’ defense was better against the run but still ranked 15th in the NFL in this department.

How did it all unfold when the Cowboys hosted the AFC West leaders? The Dallas offense remained hot but it was Kansas City that owned a 17-14 third-quarter lead. But the Cowboys responded with a pair of unanswered touchdowns and came away with a 28-17 win.

1. Dak Prescott

The second-year signal-caller did a little bit of everything on Sunday. He threw for 249 yards and two touchdowns, hitting on 21-of-33 passes. He also ran three times for 27 yards and a score in the team’s 28-17 victory over the AFC West-leading Chiefs.

2. Terrance Williams

He came up big on Sunday in the club’s 11-point win on Sunday. While he didn’t reach the end zone, he was targeted nine times and caught nine passes for 141 yards on the afternoon.

3. Cole Beasley

Teammate Ezekiel Elliott ran for 93 yards and a score. But it was Beasley that found his way into the Kansas City end zone twice on Sunday afternoon. He finished the game with 24 yards on four receptions.

Early in the week, this contest was a toss-up and even when it came to the spread. Hours before kickoff, the Cowboys suddenly emerged as a 2.5-point favorite (likely because of Elliott’s availability) and the over/under stood at an enticing 53.5.

Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs have Week 10 off and return to action the following week to take on the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium. The Dallas Cowboys make the somewhat short trip to Atlanta to square off with the defending NFC champions Falcons.
