Auburn hands Georgia their first loss of the season: Twitter reacts

Twitter was rife with scolding hot takes after Auburn took down the No. 1 team in the country in Georgia to cause further chaos in the Playoff picture.

It was never really close. Outside of its opening drive, Georgia looked like a shell of the team that raced out to a 9-0 record and the top seed in the country. Their best weapon, Nick Chubb, was largely held in check and was completely overshadowed by Auburn’s Kerryon Johnson.

This may very well be a minor setback in the grand scheme of things if Georgia can win the SEC. But for now, this was a significant result and was further proof that the College Football Playoff picture is far from set.

That’s why Twitter was acting as though Georgia’s Playoff hopes were all but dead:

Even though the Iron Bowl will be a challenge, Auburn fans have every reason to be confident. There’s a reason Georgia has been ranked ahead of Alabama since they were arguably more impressive than them up until this point. And if they can make them look this poor, they can do the same to the Crimson Tide.

For the time being, though, it’ll be interesting to see where the Playoff Committee puts these two teams. They likely won’t put Auburn in the top 4 yet, since they’re a two-loss team, but a win over Alabama then Georgia in the SEC Championship Game would be too impressive to ignore.

As for Georgia, they’ll be eager to put this loss behind them. Given their history of choking in big games, it was almost impossible to imagine they would really go undefeated. But so long as they don’t slip up the rest of the way, they should still be in the Playoff.

But this result is just one example of a long list of reasons why nothing should be ruled out in college football.
