Scott Frost is the only man who can save Nebraska football

After a particularly bad loss on Saturday, Nebraska football clearly needs Scott Frost.

With Saturday’s 54-21 loss to Minnesota, the Nebraska Cornhuskers have lost four of their last five games and are now 4-6 this season. Head coach Mike Riley is not long for his job, even with a bowl bid still in play with two games to go in the regular season, and Scott Frost is the most popular candidate to become the next football coach in Lincoln.

Frost played quarterback at Nebraska and led the team to a share of the 1997 national title. But, before he can be tabbed strictly as a “Nebraska guy” with all that entails good or bad, modern or archaic, consider his coaching resume.

Frost worked under Chip Kelly at Oregon from 2009-12 as wide receivers coach, and then took over as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach when Mark Helfrich was promoted to replace Kelly. Now in his second season as head coach at UCF, the Knights entered this week No. 1 in the country in scoring offense and fifth in total offense. And that was before hanging 49 points and 519 total yards on UConn Saturday. Any thought of an old-school Nebraska offense that runs right, left and middle with little imagination can be put to rest if Frost is the head coach.

UCF is also 9-0 now, and on track to be the Group of 5 team to make a New Year’s Day bowl.

Frost has been attached to the job opening at Florida, with Jim McElwain already gone. But he’ll be a top candidate to move up to any Power 5 school, and new Nebraska athletic director Bill Moos said Frost “has got the full package” during a radio appearance in late October.

Moss did not stop there in praising Frost during the same appearance.

"“Well, Scott, of course, has a great resume. … He has learned from some of the great football minds in the business, throughout the years both at the college level and the professional ranks.”"

"“Of course, he does have the roots here, raised in the state of Nebraska and playing for the icon that Tom Osborne is. A lot of things very positive,” Moos said. “Scott is going to coach in a Power 5 [program], and probably sooner than later. He’s paid his dues, and I’ve been quite impressed.”"

It’s unclear if Frost has any interest in coaching his alma mater, and he surely will deflect any questions about it until further notice. But Moos seems intent on making an aggressive bid to bring the UCF coach “home” to Nebraska, even if there will be plenty of competition.
