Jacksonville’s defense remains one of the best units in football, and the special teams isn’t half bad either.

One of the most surprising teams in football this year has been the Jacksonville Jaguars. For years the Jaguars have embodied the idea of a team that can win free agency and proceed to no win anything else, but that is now changing.

The defense, which has been dubbed #Sacksonville on more than on occasion this season, is one of the best units in the league. A few lucky breaks have bounced Jacksonville’s way, and everything is coming together to finally make the team a threat to win the AFC South. The door is wide open, and the Jags smell the blood in the water.

Most of that blood, at least on Sunday, belongs to the Chargers. A team marred by special teams miscues this season had one of the worst coverage breakdowns of the season. Strange things happen in Duvall County, and the Chargers special teams unit learned that on a fake punt touchdown.

Nice job by Los Angeles to make sure all the special teams assignments are taken care of. The season still isn’t totally lost for the Chargers, but mishaps like this cannot happen to teams that still want to be considered playoff contenders.

It’s easy to argue that the slow start to the season for Los Angeles was a direct result of poo special teams play. Back-to-back weeks to start the year saw a kicker miss a game-winner; both games the Chargers lost.

This error is with the punting team, but it goes to show a growing likelihood that there will be a vacancy at special teams coach this offseason in Los Angeles.
