Roger Goodell could see his proposed extension as NFL commissioner kicked further down the road by the Compensation Committee during a meeting on Monday.

This year has not been kind to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. Players protesting during the national anthem have led to a downturn in viewership across the league. Concussion talk isn’t lessening. The Ezekiel Elliott six-game suspension for domestic violence has not gone over smoothly.

While Goodell has been the NFL commissioner for over a decade, he may not get a contract extension by the NFL owners. According to ESPN, “The NFL’s Compensation Committee will hold a conference call Monday to discuss and further push ahead the proposed extension for commissioner Roger Goodell.”

Goodell’s job as NFL commissioner has been to serve the owners by creating other sorts of revenue opportunities. While Goodell has certainly done that, he is not well received by many involved in football. He could see his time coming to an end as NFL commissioner.

ESPN cites that he makes a reported $30 million annually. The NFL commissioner supposedly wants that to be bumped up to $50 million, have private jet and health care access for he and his family for life. An issue that some owners have with this is a few don’t even make $40 million annually, when you factor out the overall value of the team they own.

The biggest proponent to seeing Goodell eventually ousted as commissioner would be Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Jones is livid with how his star running back Elliott has been treated by the NFL with regards to his suspension. Of course, this could just be sour grapes for Jones.

That being said, the anthem protests and the disdain Goodell garners from many involved in the NFL could see his time as commissioner come to an end. It doesn’t seem that Goodell is going to walk away willingly either. This could get really ugly really fast.
