The 2017 Cy Young Awards were handed out on Wednesday night, with Corey Kluber and Max Scherzer earning the honors for this season.

When it comes to a starting pitcher in Major League Baseball, there is not an award more coveted than the Cy Young. Recognizing the best pitcher in each league, it’s truly an accomplishment every pitcher in the game strives for.

Wednesday night, the 2017 Cy Young Awards were handed out, with Corey Kluber of the Cleveland Indians and Max Scherzer of the Washington Nationals earning the honors.

On the American League side of things, there was very little drama in regards to the voting. Kluber received 28 of the 30 first-place votes required the take home the coveted award, and rightfully so. En route to his second Cy Young Award in four years, Kluber was phenomenal in helping lead the Indians back to the playoffs. In the 2017 season, he compiled an incredible 18-4 record with a 2.25 ERA and 265 strikeouts, the second-most of his career.

What really helped Kluber capture the second Cy Young of his career was the great second half of the season that he enjoyed for the Indians. Going 11-1 after the All-Star break, the Indians got all they needed from their ace as they made another playoff run.

As for the National League, the voting there was a bit closer, but ultimately the nod ended up going to Nationals starter Scherzer for the second season in a row. In helping guide the Nationals to the National League East title, Scherzer compiled a 16-6 record with an ERA of 2.51 and 268 strikeouts. Winning the Cy Young Award just once is an amazing feat in the career of a Major League Baseball pitcher, but bringing home the second one in a row puts Scherzer in some pretty elite company.

Congratulations are in order to two of the best pitchers in the game today for picking up Cy Young Awards to add to their collections on Wednesday night.
