30 years of WWE Survivor Series: Ranking each event
By Luke Norris
29. Survivor Series 1999
The 1999 Survivor Series will always be remembered for something that happened outside the ring and given the talent level of the competitors on this show, that’s not a good thing. This was the night in Detroit that Stone Cold Steve Austin was run down by a car. As interesting as that was, the main event was supposed to be him, The Rock and Triple H in a Triple Threat Match for the WWE Championship and that was huge. They were the three biggest stars in the company at the time and then it just didn’t happen, which probably upset many people who shelled out the cash for the pay-per-view. Austin ended up being replaced by Big Show, who won the title in an average match.
The rest of the card featured a lot of talented wrestlers but the matches just weren’t all that great from top to bottom and there were so many quick eliminations in some of the traditional Survivor Series matches that it was hard to get invested in anything that was happening in any of them. The longest one was The Hollys and Too Cool (listening to Jerry Lawler try to talk up his son was pretty comical) beating The Hardy Boyz and Edge and Christian (because that booking makes sense) and that was under 15 minutes. That actually might have been the best match of the night if that says anything.
It was more of a novelty night than anything else as Fabulous Moolah and Mae Young were actually involved in a match that went less than two minutes. Chyna beat Chris Jericho in a match for the Intercontinental Championship and Kurt Angle made his WWE debut against the always-dangerous Shawn Stasiak. It just seemed like a wasted night.
