College Football Playoff Rankings 2017: Projected top four after Week 12
By Brad Weiss
Through the first quarter of their matchup against the Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday, it looked like the Oklahoma Sooners might actually be in for a fight. The Sooners only led the Jayhawks by the score of 7-0 heading into the second quarter, and Kansas had gotten some big hits on Baker Mayfield. Well, Oklahoma hit their stride in the second quarter, scoring two more touchdowns, and hitting the locker room with a 21-3 lead over the over-matched Jayhawks.
Mayfield finished the first half with two touchdown passes, and he did not stop there. The Heisman Trophy frontrunner has his team in position for a possible shot at the College Football Playoff, but they will have to show dominance the rest of the way. The Sooners outscored the Jayhawks 20-0 in the second half, as the game finished with a Sooners 41-3 victory.
Kansas came into this game with only one win, so nobody expected this one to be close, but a home game against a very tough West Virginia team looms in their regular-season finale. If the Sooners take care of business next weekend, it will set up a matchup against TCU in the Big 12 Championship Game. The Sooners beat TCU a couple weeks back by the score of 38-20, and the Horned Frogs are currently dealing with an injury to their quarterback, Kenny Hill.
Oklahoma has incredible star power, so the powers that be will likely look for a reason to get them into the playoff. Mayfield has been a Heisman finalist for most of his Oklahoma career, and he may actually end up winning the coveted trophy this season. Oklahoma has one more hurdle before the Big 12 Championship Game, and Mayfield will likely use it to make a statement to the Heisman voter, and the College Football Playoff committee.
