Texas Tech Red Raiders kicker Clayton Hatfield will want to forget about this missed 20-yard field goal.

It’s been a tough season for the Texas Tech Red Raiders, and things aren’t going to get better after kicker Clayton Hatfield missed a short field goal that will be played on highlight reels for the rest of the season.

Texas Tech looked to upset the No. 12 TCU Horned Frogs on Saturday afternoon in Lubbock, and managed to hang in for the first half. While the Red Raiders generated little offense all game long, they had a chance to tie the game at 10 in the third quarter after recovering a TCU fumble on the 6-yard line.

TCU’s defense held, setting up a short Hatfield field goal attempt that would have cut the Horned Frogs lead to 10-6. Unfortunately, Hatfield shanked the 20-yard kick badly to a seemingly impossible degree, via Max Olson of The Athletic.

It’s windy in Lubbock today, but there’s no explanation for how Hatfield managed to kick the ball straight sideways. Hatfield also missed a 47-yard try earlier in the game, although he gave Texas Tech its only the points of the game on a 22-yard make in the first quarter.

Just to make things worse, TCU drove the length of the field on its ensuing drive and took a commanding 17-3 lead on a Jalen Reagor touchdown. Texas Tech is in serious danger of missing a bowl game, and the woeful missed kick just about sums up the Red Raiders’ season.
