According to the Houston Chronicle, the Texas A&M Aggies will fire head coach Kevin Sumlin after this week’s game against LSU and will pursue Jimbo Fisher.

In what will come as little to no surprise to those that have been following along, it appears that Kevin Sumlin has reached the end of his tenure with the Texas A&M Aggies. It looks like this week against the LSU Tigers will be it for the head coach.

According to Brent Zwerneman of the Houston Chronicle, Texas A&M intends to fire Sumlin following the team’s regular-season finale against the LSU Tigers and will pursue Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher. Texas A&M is 7-4 overall and 4-3 in the SEC this year and has a career record of 51-25 and is 25-22 in the SEC.

“Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin will be fired following the Aggies’ regular-season finale at LSU on Saturday night, multiple people with knowledge of the situation said,” Zwerneman reported.

The other big news item, of course, is the pursuit of Fisher. With the Seminoles having a down season, it’s been a strange year no one was expecting from the program. It’s hard to see him leaving with the success, but he could also be looking for a new challenge in the SEC. Like Sumlin, Fisher has also coached a Heisman-winning quarterback (Jameis Winston) but Fisher also has a national championship on his resume.

If Sumlin didn’t enter the season on the hot seat, it was at least pretty warm after three straight eight-win seasons after beginning those seasons 5-0 before collapsing during the rough SEC stretch of the schedule. He certainly planted himself on the hot seat this season in the very first game when the program suffered an epic collapse against UCLA on the road. After that, the end seemed to be written on his back before they rattled off some wins.

Add in the frustrations over recent years with recruits decommitting, players transferring to other programs and Sumlin’sonce-promising tenure seemed to have one too many issues weighing it down. If the Aggies lose this week, his final win will have been a 31-24 road victory at Ole Miss.
