The Chiefs are in the bottom third of the league in pass defense, so they addressed a need on Wednesday.

In a shocking turn of events, the Kansas City Chiefs have lost four of their last five games after starting the season 5-0. Part of the reason they’re in such a funk is because their defense has not been up to par with what Chiefs fans are accustomed to seeing. Enter Darrelle Revis.

After Phillip Gaines made the egregious error of committing pass interference on fourth down in overtime against the Giants, it was clear something had to be done.

On Wednesday, the Chiefs signed seven-time Pro Bowl cornerback Revis.

The 32-year-old cornerback hasn’t played at all this year, and was last seen in New York playing for the Jets. Unfortunately, the last time Revis was on the field, he was getting toasted on a weekly basis. On the bright side, that’s a rare blemish in an otherwise Hall of Fame career for him.

The fact of the matter is that the Chiefs needed to find some kind of answer at the second corner spot, because it hasn’t been great to them this season. Gaines has looked like a high school corner. Kenneth Acker was getting spun around in circles against Dez Bryant, who isn’t the best of route runners. As for Terrance Mitchell, no one seems to know why the Chiefs don’t give him many snaps.

The Chiefs are in man-to-man coverage just about 70 percent of the time, and Revis made his money shutting down the best of the best over his 10-year career. The Chiefs aren’t going to ask him to do anything he hasn’t done before, and if they can get even half of prime Revis, it’s a win for this defense.

There’s no reason for the Chiefs or their fans to panic right now, but they had to address a clear flaw on this defense. Not to go unnoticed is that they’ve actually improved points wise on defense over the past few weeks. We shall see just how much Revis can help this team, but he was a risk worth taking.
