Mississippi State quarterback Nick Fitzgerald went down with an ugly leg injury on Thanksgiving night against the rival Ole Miss Rebels.

Early in the first quarter in the Thanksgiving night match-up of intrastate rivals Mississippi State and Ole Miss, Bulldogs’ quarterback Nick Fitzgerald went down with a pretty gruesome leg injury. For those on the squeamish side, the enclosed photo may not be for you.

The staff at “Saturday Down South” reported the following from the game. “Ole Miss players were all kneeling out of respect for Fitzgerald, and some players even cheered when he was put on the cart to show respect.”

The young quarterback entered the game on Thursday night having completed 56.2 percent of his passes for 1,770 yards and 15 scores compared to only 10 interceptions. The 6’5″, 230-pound performer, who has led the team to an 8-3 record this season, has also rushed for 968 yards and 14 touchdowns this year.

Saturday Down South also reported Keytaon Thompson came in the game to replace Fitzgerald.

Mississippi State will try to continue on and win the Egg Bowl at home, something it was favored to do going into the holiday. With or without a victory over the Rebels, the Bulldogs will be going to a bowl game, although without Fitzgerald, the excitement around that achievement has been dulled considerably.

Fitzgerald, a 6-foor-5, 230-pound junior out of Richmond Hill, GA, had thrown for 15 touchdowns against 10 interceptions on the season. While not a pro prospect, Fitzgerald is one of the more talented quarterbacks in the SEC.
