Arizona State seems to be open to practically any candidate to become their next football coach, and Mack Brown said he’d be willing to talk about the job.

After the official firing of Todd Graham on Sunday morning, multiple candidates have surfaced to possibly take over the football program at Arizona State. Former Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin is probably still atop that list, but on Tuesday former NFL head coach and current ESPN analyst Herm Edwards surfaced as a strong candidate in Tempe.

Back in June another current ESPN analyst, Mack Brown, came out of nowhere to say he’d be open to coaching again if the right situation came up. It’s hard to know if Arizona State would be exactly that kind of situation for the 66-year-old.

If Arizona State athletic director Ray Anderson is going to interview Edwards, it’s not out of the question for Brown to be a candidate for the job too. He at least comes with a significant resume at the college level, with 29 seasons and 244 wins as a head coach at Appalachian State (1983), Tulane (1985-87), North Carolina (1988-97) and Texas (1998-2013), whereas the only college coaching experience Edwards has came at San Jose State as defensive backs coach from 1987-89.

Coincidentally or not, Brown appeared on a local radio show in Phoenix and threw his hat in the ring for the Sun Devils’ job.

Brown said he’d be interested in talking to Arizona State, with the obvious caveat of whether they want to talk to him. That’s a significant line of demarcation at this point, with no indication of the interest being mutual. But Sumlin’s hire, which appeared to be a slam-dunk after after Graham was fired and Sumlin was officially available, is now open to all kinds of possibilities.
