College football championship games ranked by watchability
Ranking the best college football games for die-hard fans to watch on Championship Weekend.
There are so many great games on the schedule this weekend as conference championships will be won and College Football Playoff berths will be secured. If you didn’t think ahead and clear your schedule and come up with a great series of excuses to get out of any obligations and have a fixed amount of time on your hands, then I’m here to help.
I understand not everyone can devote their entire weekend to college football and have to pick and choose what games they can sit down for and enjoy for three-four hours. That’s why I came up with a list to rank the best 10 games of the weekend. I did exclude the games from the Group of Five that weren’t for conference championships and I did exclude the Florida State-UL Monroe game they need to win to extend the nation’s longest bowl streak.
Best College Football Games of the Week by Watchability
9. MAC Championship Game: Akron vs. Toledo – 12:00 p.m. – ESPN
Toledo is a 21.5-point favorite over Akron and already beat the Zips in Oct. 21, 48-21, so I’m not anticipating things being much different this go around. Toledo will win big and not provide much fireworks for the casual fan to tune in when the Big 12 and AAC Championship Games are on at the same time.
8. Conference USA Championship Game: North Texas vs. FAU – 12:00 p.m. – ESPN2
Lane Kiffin is the draw here. He’s the most dangerous man on Twitter and his FAU team is pretty dangerous on the field too. The Owls could run the score up in this one considering they already own a 69-31 win over North Texas on Oct. 21. This one could be over by halftime and Kiffin could be trolling Nick Saban, Tennessee and anyone else who will care by the second half.
7. Mountain West Championship Game: No. 25 Fresno State vs. Boise State – 7:45 p.m. – ESPN
These two teams only played last weekend with Fresno State winning 28-17 at home, but now must go to Boise to take on the Broncos for the conference crown. I wish this game was on earlier in the day because this should be a fun one to watch, but the alternatives at this time are too good to pass up.
6. ACC Championship Game: No. 1 Clemson vs. No. 7 Miami – 8:00 p.m. – ABC
The ACC Championship Game is the least glamorous of the Power 5 games. Miami is coming off their first loss of the season to Pitt, who owns a losing record, and the Canes are running out of gas. The turnover chain has been a fun story all year and Mark Richt has done a tremendous job coaching this team, but I think Clemson takes care of business en route to their third straight playoff appearance.
