The Pelicans dodged a huge bullet with the latest Anthony Davis news.

Anthony Davis has been prone to injury over his career. Whether it’s something that keeps him out for a few games or a few weeks there always seems to be something ailing the 24-year-old superstar.

On Saturday, Davis hurt his groin on a seemingly innocent play. He was boxing out Utah Jazz forward Derrick Favors, and just went down. He had to be helped to the locker room, and couldn’t put any weight on his leg. Today the Pelicans found out that thankfully the injury isn’t too serious, and Davis is only considered day-to-day.

This is the best news the Pelicans could have gotten considering how bad the injury looked when it initially happened. The Pelicans do have a game on Monday night against the Golden State Warriors, and as you might have guessed Davis won’t play in that game.

This is a huge blow for a team that has playoff aspirations, and currently holds the eight seed in the Western Conference. Seeing as the bottom half of the conference is painstakingly horrible they may actually be able to survive Davis’ absence. The next closest team to them in the standings is Oklahoma City, but they are actually on an upward trend right now.

As for Davis himself, hopefully this is just a bump in the road during a career-best year. The presence of DeMarcus Cousins has obviously taken away some shots, but he’s shooting better than he ever has before. He’s also averaging a career high in assists. Should he miss extended time this will definitely hurt his MVP chances.

The Pelicans are already behind the eight ball when it comes to surrounding Davis and Cousins with talent. Outside of Jrue Holiday they really don’t have elite talent. They are heavily ed on their two big guns, and would love to have Davis back sooner rather than later.
