The Heisman Trophy remains college football’s most prestigious trophy. Which school has won it the most?

After the college football season wraps up, the Heisman Trophy is presented to the sport’s most outstanding player. It tends to be a player on the offensive side of the ball unless it’s Charles Woodson.

In recent years, the Heisman has bounced from school-to-school, with no one program winning it in back-to-back years since 2004 and 2005. Except if you don’t count Reggie Bush’s win being vacated in the latter year. Otherwise, it’s difficult for a school to claim this prize in successive years, let alone having the most Heisman winners in college football.

However, over the years, three schools have garnered the most Heisman winners, totaling seven each. They are some of the most prestigious programs in college football, so who does this group include?

Notre Dame is one of the three schools, last winning the Heisman in 1987. Angelo Bertelli, Johnny Lujack, Leon Hart, Johnny Latner, Paul Hornung, John Huarte and Tim Brown are the seven Fighting Irish to win.

Ohio State is the second of the three schools. Les Hovarth, Vic Janowicz, Howard Cassady, Archie Griffin (twice), Eddie George and Troy Smith make up the list, with the latter player winning in 2006.

The previously mentioned USC claims the final spot if Bush is included. He, Mike Garrett, OJ Simpson, Charles White, Marcus Allen, Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart make up the list.

Entering the 2017 season, Trojans quarterback Sam Darnold was favored to win the Heisman but may not reach the finalist portion of the voting. If he returns for the 2018 season, could he break this three-way tie?

What about Ohio State’s running back, JK Dobbins? He broke onto the scene this fall, becoming one of the Big Ten’s top players. Will he be favored to win in 2018 and break the tie?
