Twitter reacts to Baker Mayfield winning Heisman Trophy
By John Buhler
Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield won the 2017 Heisman Trophy. Here is how Twitter is handling Mayfield taking the Heisman Trophy back to Norman.
Coming as no surprise, Oklahoma Sooners redshirt senior quarterback Baker Mayfield won the 2017 Heisman Trophy. Mayfield beat out 2016 winner Louisville Cardinals quarterback Lamar Jackson and Stanford Cardinal running back Bryce Love.
Mayfield was the favorite to win the 2017 Heisman Trophy. He led the Sooners to a 11-1 (8-1) regular season record, a third-straight Big 12 Conference Championship and a second trip to the College Football Playoff in three seasons.
In his third season as the Oklahoma starting quarterback, Mayfield completed 71.0 percent of his passes for 4,340 yards, 41 touchdowns and just five interceptions. He averaged a ridiculous 11.8 yards per attempt and an adjusted yards per attempt of 13.4. His quarterback rating of 203.8 broke the scales.
On the field, there was no question that this Heisman Trophy belonged to Mayfield. He’s quarterbacking the No. 2 team in the country. If not for a slip-up at home to a feisty Iowa State Cyclones team, Oklahoma would be undefeated and the No. 1 team in the country.
That being said, Mayfield’s Heisman candidacy was not without controversy. He was arrested during the offseason in Fayetteville, Arkansas for public intoxication. Mayfield had four separate incidents during games for the 2017 Sooners.
He stuck the University of Oklahoma flag at the 50-yard line of Ohio Stadium after upsetting the Ohio State Buckeyes in The Horseshoe earlier in the season. Mayfield talked some mad trash to the awful Baylor Bears during the pre-game, saying he was their daddy.
Being that he previously played at Texas Tech, he wore a shirt to troll them before beating them. Lastly, the captains of the terrible Kansas Jayhawks wouldn’t shake his hand before the opening coin toss. Mayfield would lose his captaincy before his final game in Norman versus the West Virginia.
But whatever. He and the Sooners beat the tar out of all of those teams. Twitter had some stuff to say about Mayfield winning the Heisman, so here it goes…

Basically, Twitter is all over the place with Mayfield winning the Heisman. Twitter loves him and HATES him simultaneously. He’s going to win every Super Bowl ever quarterbacking some awful franchise that has never won one. Mayfield is also going to bust like Johnny Manziel. One thing is certain. Kliff Kingsbury, what were you thinking, bro?
