Raiders at Chiefs: Highlights, score and recap

With first place in the AFC West on the line, the Oakland Raiders went into Kansas City on Sunday, taking on the Chiefs inside Arrowhead Stadium.

The Kansas City Chiefs and Oakland Raiders met up on Sunday afternoon in a game to decide who would move into first place in the AFC West. Oakland opened up with the ball, but a three-and-out would give the ball to  the Chiefs. On their first drive, the Chiefs ended up with three points, thanks to a 53-yard field goal by Harrison Butker. The kick would put Kansas City up 3-0, giving Kansas City the momentum early on.

After another failed drive by Oakland, the Chiefs surgically moved the ball down the field. Late in the drive, star tight end Travis Kelce appeared to be injured on a play that saw a touchdown call get reversed. That would be the final play of the opening quarter, and when action resumed, the Chiefs went up 10-0 on a touchdown run by Kareem Hunt.

Coming into this game with the 30th ranked defense, many believed the Raiders would be able to move the ball easily against the Chiefs. However, Bob Sutton had a nice game plan, and it was all Chiefs early on. Down 13-0, the Raiders put together their best drive of the first half, though star wideout Amari Cooper was injured during the drive. The Raiders saw their drive end via a Carr interception, as he was hit as he threw.

Kansas City took advantage of the turnover, putting three more points on the board. Oakland got the ball back with under two minutes left in the half, but they were stuffed on a third-and-1. The Chiefs had a chance to put more on the board prior to the half, but Bruce Irvin’s third sack of the game put an end to the drive. The teams went into the locker room with the Chiefs up 16-0, and with the ball to start the second half.

Butker hit his fourth field goal of the game to go up 19-0, and then there were turnovers on consecutive plays. Johnny Holton fumbled after catching a Carr pass, and after the Chiefs got the ball back, Smith threw an interception to Karl Joseph. That led to another three-and-out by the Raiders, who should have not even made the trip. Charcandrick West blasted through the Raiders defense to go up 26-0, in a game that was one of the bigger surprises of the early slate.

Oakland would get on the board with under nine minutes left in the game, as Marshawn Lynch scored from 22 yards out. Oakland made it interesting late, but fell behind too far to make the late-game run. With the loss, the Raiders are likely out of the playoff race, as they would need a lot of help to get there. Kansas City needed this win, and after the game, they sat alone atop the AFC West.

The Raiders came into this game as road underdogs, as they were given four points in their matchup against the Chiefs. The Chiefs won the game by 11, easily covering the points. The over/under was set at 48.5, and the total fell well short of that. All odds were available throughout the week on OddsShark.com.

Three Stars

1. Kareem Hunt, Kansas City Chiefs

The rookie running  back for the Chiefs went off against the Raiders on Sunday, rushing for over 100 yards against the division rival. Hunt found the end zone on a one-yard plunge, while also hauling in three catches. If the Chiefs can get him going, this offense is going to be tough come playoff time.

2. Kansas City Defense

The defense came to play today, and while it ended up being an 11-point game, this one was not close. In fact, the Chiefs led 26-0 up until under nine minutes in the game, as they put the Raiders offense to bed early. In total, Kansas City picked off Derek Carr twice, sacked him three times, and had five tackles for a loss. It was a great game for a team who came in ranked 30th in football.

3. Bruce Irvin, Oakland Raiders

The veteran linebacker had quite the day against the Chiefs, as he racked up two sacks on the afternoon. He actually looked to have three sacks, but had one taken away from him. He was a big reason why the Raiders defense was able to hold the Chiefs to so many field goals, when the offense failed to get things going through the first three quarters of the game.

Next Week

Both of these teams will be available to watch in primetime in Week 15, though on different nights. The Chiefs will play host to the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday night, in another huge AFC West battle. The Raiders will take on the Dallas Cowboys inside the Oakland Coliseum, with the game being played on Sunday Night Football.
