Is Supergirl new tonight, December 11?

While Supergirl is on its winter hiatus, it’s time to get yourself ready for season 3’s rather odd schedule that it will be sharing with Legends of Tomorrow.

Supergirl wrapped up the “first half” of season 3 last week with the episode, “Reign.” From an objective standpoint, it set up a lot for the rest of the season. From Reign’s … reign … over National City and complete annihilation of Supergirl (Why didn’t she use all the moves in her power set?) to James’ continued lack of storyline being propped up by a love interest (Lucy, Kara and now Lena), fans may be waiting for the Legion to finally make an official appearance.

Will Mon-El finally get a suit? Does anyone really care?

Unfortunately, Supergirl‘s most surprising development has nothing to do with what’s happening on-screen. Instead, fans received some truly head-scratching news that Supergirl‘s schedule will be interrupted for nine weeks by Legends of Tomorrow:

"As reported by Entertainment Weekly, Supergirl will return on Jan. 15, but only for four episodes. It will then take nine weeks off while Legends of Tomorrow (which airs its first new episode of 2018 on Feb. 12) takes over its Monday 8 p.m. time slot and finishes its season 3 run. Supergirl will then be back on April 16 and go all out to the end of its third season on the incredibly late date of June 18."

June 18?!? Who’s going to watch this show in June? (Me, grumpily, but that’s still a serious commitment.) Black Lightning‘s debut displaced Legends of Tomorrow and “forced” it to Mondays, which is all well and good. But I think this will be an interesting test for Supergirl fans: Does absence really make the heart grow fonder?

I mean, if we look at this optimistically (at this point, it’s the only thing you can do with Supergirl), we can pray that the time off will give the show an opportunity to restructure how it ends the season and maybe rethink its direction. There are a few shake-ups currently in the works at both The CW and Warner Bros. Entertainment/DC Comics division anyway, so there’s always hope.

Wouldn’t it be funny if Legends of Tomorrow somehow managed to pull in more viewers sitting in Supergirl’s own timeslot? Guess who’s going to watch seasons 1 and 2 on Netflix over the break…

Supergirl returns on Jan. 15 with the episode “Legion of Super-Heroes.”
