It turns out that #MayMac wasn’t as big as #MayPac after all, at least in North America that is.

Showtime Boxing announced in a press release earlier today that the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor boxing match sold 4.3 million PPV’s in North America, just shy of the 4.6 million buys that Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao did in 2015.

There had been early estimates of 4.4 million buys, with Showtime executive Stephen Espinoza quoting that number too. UFC president Dana White was quoted by Urijah Faber as saying the bout did 6.5 million buys. If that number is true, it’s likely to be the worldwide figure as opposed to any domestic numbers.

Sky Sports Box Office, the PPV broadcaster which aired the fight in the U.K confirmed back in September that the Mayweather vs. McGregor match broke the U.K PPV record with over 1 million buys. Mayweather’s win over Pacquiao in 2015 did around 700,000 buys in the U.K, to compare.

It is still likely that #MayMac will break the worldwide PPV record and live up to it’s name, ‘The Money Fight’.

Showtime also reported that the fight generated $600 million in revenue. To contrast those numbers, the UFC as a whole has only twice had revenues more than $600 million for a year period, in 2015 and 2016.

The PPV number of 4.3 million is also still more PPV’s than the UFC will ship this year. That is in large part to the promotion missing the PPV power of McGregor on their cards, as well as stars like Jon Jones only fighting once during the year.

The fight itself took place on Aug. 26, 2017 from the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas. McGregor (21-3 MMA) was making his professional boxing debut while Mayweather was looking to make his boxing record a perfect 50-0.

McGregor started well and controlled the fight early, however Mayweather took over from the fourth round onward and showed exactly why he’s considered the greatest of all time. The fight was eventually stopped in the 10th round after Mayweather poured the pressure on McGregor and took his record to 50-0.

McGregor hasn’t fought in either boxing or MMA since the fight but his coach has hinted at a return in early 2018. Mayweather earlier this week that he could ‘do a three-four fight deal in the Octagon and make a billion dollars’.
