13. R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl
Formerly known as just the New Orleans Bowl before sponsors were necessary to keep these smaller ones afloat, the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl is just another in the growing line of unnecessarily long bowl names.
The annual Sun Belt vs. Conference-USA bout is a game that has been dominated by Louisiana-Lafayette over the past five, or so, years. The Ragin Cajuns are essentially a home team in this game as it’s played in New Orleans but was previously in Lafayette, La.
Louisiana-Lafayette has had a couple of R+L Carrier wins vacated, but that’s not something that will cause the program to lose sleep at night. While its the local bowl of that program, it’s also a terribly named one which they would probably like changed back to just the New Orleans Bowl.
The game has been around since 2001 but has been named the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl since 2006 when the company became the sponsor. Troy won the first-ever matchup after the name change against Rice, but it has been dominated over time by UL-Lafayette and Southern Miss who have combined for eight wins.
