Carrie Fisher may have died in real life, but was that enough to kill off her character in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, or will we see her in Episode 9?

*There are MAJOR SPOILERS for The Last Jedi below. Continue reading at your own risk.*

Last year was the worst for many reasons, but celebrity deaths was one of the main ones. Carrie Fisher’s came at the worst time, since it was in late December and everyone thought they were out of the woods. But it also gave Star Wars fans a chance to reflect and celebrate the life of Princess Leia.

While seeing Leia in The Force Awakens was a shot of pure adrenaline, there was reason to think she wouldn’t make it past The Last Jedi. Fisher’s real life death and clips from the trailer, led many to believe that Leia’s death was imminent. Not only that, but that Kylo Ren would kill her after he killed his father.

But not only did Leia survive The Last Jedi, Kylo Ren had a chance to kill her but didn’t pull the trigger. The ship she was in did eventually get blown up, but she somehow managed to levitate through space back into the Resistance’s fleet. Looks like Leia’s Force capabilities go beyond her strong woman’s intuition. However, the end credits had a very touching tribute to Fisher.

This leaves a big question as to what they do with Leia in Episode IX. It’s possible that they’ve shot some of her scenes for that movie already, but they might have to go the Grand Moff Tarkin route and CGI her into it. In either case, it already feels like her role in it will be significantly reduced. It doesn’t feel like there’s much left to tell of her story.

The sequel trilogy has been intent on killing off original trilogy characters, with Han and Luke having already bitten the dust, meaning that Leia might be the next to go.
