The Steelers lost a huge game against the Patriots after a late touchdown call was reversed.

What we saw on Sunday in Pittsburgh was more than just a preview of the AFC title game. It was a complete shift in the playoff picture and it all came with a fake spike and a batted ball.

Let’s just go over what happened in the last minute of the Steelers-Patriots game before we dive into what it all means.

Trailing 24-19, Tom Brady led the Patriots down the field for a go-ahead touchdown — nailing the two-point conversion to stretch the new lead to 27-24. All the Patriots needed to do was play 50-seconds of defense but they failed to play even 15-seconds while letting JuJu Smith-Schuster go down inside of the redzone on a single play.

This is where things got screwy. Jesse James caught what we all thought was the go-ahead touchdown, but it was determined the ball moved (maybe) when he hit the ground. Pittsburgh failed to get out of bounds on the next pass and decided to fake a spike and throw to the endzone rather than play for overtime.

Needless to say, the ball was tipped and New England picked it off to end the game.

Fans were full of emotions after the game:

It wasn’t all bad, though. As far as watching the game from a pure entertainment standpoint the game was a rousing success.

This changes so much in the AFC Playoff picture. That batted ball on a fake spike changed:

  • The road in the AFC to Super Bowl 52 going through Pittsburgh
  • Jacksonville being in line to get the No. 2 seed
  • Where Kansas City will likely play in the Divisional Round

Those are three massive swings in momentum in such a short amount of time. They say football is a game of inches, and never before have those inches caused such a range of emotion.
