As Herm Edwards assembles his full coaching staff at Arizona State, Kurt Warner is open to a possible opportunity.

Arizona State athletic director Ray Anderson decided to fire Todd Graham as football coach, and replace him with an NFL-type structure and new head coach Herm Edwards as a proverbial CEO-type. But the plan to keep defensive coordinator Phil Bennett and offensive coordinator Billy Napier has fallen flat, and Edwards now has to assemble big pieces of a coaching staff alongside the start of the early signing period this week.

Wide receivers coach Rob Likens has been promoted to replace Napier as offensive coordinator. But if Edwards wants to add another offensive mind to the mix in some capacity, a big-name one will apparently listen.

Speaking at an event Monday night, via KNXV ABC-15 in Phoenix, Kurt Warner said he’s open to helping Edwards at Arizona State.

"I’m always willing to help anybody if I can,” Warner said. “Knowing Herm, obviously this is a big jump for him, but I know he’s up for the task.”“I just always keep myself open. If there’s anything that I can add or any expertise that I can give, whether it’s a player, an organization, a university, Coach Herm — any of those people.”"

Warner is a former Super Bowl MVP, current NFL Network analyst and he of course led the Arizona Cardinals to their only Super Bowl appearance. But he does have some coaching experience, as offensive coordinator at Scottsdale Desert Mountain High School, where his son Kade played.

A job offer is hardly sure to come to Warner from Edwards, let alone any sort of official coaching role or title. But Warner seems to be alright with that at this point.

"I’m not back here begging for a job. I’m not looking to be an offensive coordinator at the college level,” he said. “I just make myself available (and) if anybody can use me as a resource, I’m happy to do that."

Manny Wilkins will be back as Arizona State’s starting quarterback next year, and he’ll be aided by the continuity of Likens replacing Napier rather than having to work in an entirely new offense. But Warner could be useful as another set of eyes on the Sun Devils’ quarterback group in general, if Edwards wants it.
