Is the post office open on New Year’s Day?

Old post office in Najac, France. Najac is in the Aveyron department in southern France. Najac village is set along a ridge above a bend in the Aveyron River. The village is known for historic buildings and apparent medieval character. In the earlier part of the last century the village had around 2000 people but it suffered marked population decline as workers migrated to towns and cities. Several films concern the village and its surrounds, for example, La Vie Comme Elle Va. (photo by Mike Kemp/In Pictures via Getty Images)

January 1, New Year’s Day, falls on a Monday in 2018. What does this mean for the US Postal Service?

You may be hoping for mail on the first day of the new year. Perhaps you’re waiting on a package. Perhaps you’re expecting some important paperwork to get the year off to a hot start. Perhaps you need to go to the post office because your New Year’s resolution is to finally mail the remainder of your 2017 Christmas presents.

Unfortunately, we regret to inform you all of that must wait a day, as the U.S Postal Service recognizes New Year’s Day as a national holiday. Mail is not delivered or sent on such holidays, and post office locations are not open. (USPS will also be closed and not delivering mail on New Year’s Eve, which happens to fall on a Sunday this year, a day the USPS is not usually open for business anyway.)

January 1 is the first of many Mondays in 2018 the USPS will enjoy a long weekend along with the rest of the nation. January 15 (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day), February 19 (Presidents’ Day), May 28 (Memorial Day), September 3 (Labor Day), October 8 (Columbus Day), November 12 (Veterans Day) are all also national holidays for which post offices will be closed and mailmen on vacation.  (Independence Day falls on Wednesday this year, which is sure to be a mess for figuring out when places are open.)

But all of that is still to come. For New Year’s Day, you can rest confident that all the time you spend on your couch, ordering delivery food and such, is not at the expense of any chores that could be accomplished at the post office. The post office is not open on New Year’s Day and mail is not delivered on January 1.
