The NFL offseason is coming for many teams, and it’s time to start looking about how each club can improve for 2018 with their salary cap situation.

With the 2017 NFL regular season coming to a close, 20 teams are already starting to figure out plans toward getting a postseason berth next season. In the coming weeks, some of the current playoff squads will be doing the same thing.

In the offseason, the first way to improve is through free agency. The tampering period begins on March 12 before full-fledged free agency begins two days later on March 14 at 4:00 p.m. ET.

So how much does each club have at its disposal to spend? Well, we don;t know the exact salary cap, so everything is a projection at this juncture. In 2017, the salary cap was $167 million. Considering the cap has jumped around $10-12 million per year in recent campaigns, Over The Cap is projecting that the cap ends up somewhere around $178 million for the next league year.

If that’s the case, here is how all 32 teams stand at the moment (h/t Over The Cap):

As you can see, the San Francisco 49ers are flush with cash. Some of that will be used to keep Jimmy Garoppolo around, whether it be on a franchise tag north of $20 million or a long-term deal. Additionally, the Cleveland Browns have more than $111 million to spend if they choose, giving new general manager John Dorsey a nice bundle to work with.

Conversely, the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles are both well over the cap. However, the Chiefs can shave almost $50 million in space by trading Alex Smith and releasing Tamba Hali, Dee Ford, Derrick Johnson and Darrelle Revis. Look for Kansas City to make at least most of those moves.
