2018 will overshadow the past few soccer years in part due to a World Cup. Here are 10 bold predictions for the world of soccer in the new year.
The world soccer landscape in 2018 is sure to be full of intrigue and excitement. A Champions League winner will be crowned, the World Cup is set dominate the summer months and league title races are heating up around the world.
Before we embark on the epic journey to come, why not boldly predict what’s going to happen in those competitions? These predictions definitely won’t come back to humiliate me in the long run, as I’m currently second to last in our Premier League score predictions among the FanSided soccer staff. Why not try and predict the unpredictable nature of world soccer?

Paris Saint-Germain set a Ligue 1 record for points in a season
PSG are already leading second-place Moncao by nine points at the time of writing. Predicting a title for them at this point, or even at the beginning of the season, would hardly be considered bold, but breaking their own points record set just two seasons ago might be.
PSG currently have 50 points in Ligue 1 on the season. If they continue on the rest of the league year in the same form, they would end on 100 points, four more than they had in 2015-16 when they broke the record the first time. Unai Emery’s squad can only lose once more on the season if they want to top that.
This, of course, would be an arduous task. PSG have already dropped seven points in their first 19 matches. However, five of those seven points came at the hands of some unlikely clubs. A 0-0 draw away to seventh-place Montpellier and a 2-1 defeat by 11th place Strasbourg left a bitter taste in players mouths. PSG beat four of the top-five clubs they faced in the first half of the schedule and looked dominant in a few. While not on the level of destruction Manchester City are showing in the Premier League, PSG should be able to run through the rest of the league year.
The main obstacle in their way is the Champions League. Aspirations are high this season among supporters and ownership, and a few slip-ups in the league around the time PSG face Real Madrid in the Champions League round of 16 could be forgiven if they advance. But with the absurd amount of talent in the team, a record-setting league season shouldn’t be out of the picture.
