Oklahoma busted out a trick play as Baker Mayfield ended up the recipient of a touchdown pass.

The Oklahoma Sooners started with a bang in the College Football Playoff. They scored on their first four drives and had a touchdown against the vaunted Georgia defense during the first three on New Year’s Day. Baker Mayfield was on fire to begin the game, and he even got his turn to catch a touchdown.

Typically throwing them or running for them, Mayfield showed off his wide receiver skills as well. It came courtesy of a little trickery and forcing the Georgia Bulldogs to make a decision that left Mayfield wide open.

As the Sooners were deep in Georgia territory, they got stopped short on their first two attempts to get in the end zone. Needing to defeat the speed of the Georgia defense, an end around saw wide receiver CeeDee Lamb take off for the end zone.

With Lamb on the move, Georgia had a tough decision to make. They chose to chase after Lamb as a runner and that left Mayfield wide open in the corner. The receiver lofted it up and Mayfield snatched the ball in the corner of the end zone.

For a first half, it was as perfect as it could be for the Oklahoma offense. They went down the field on Georgia on just about every drive and Mayfield looked every bit the Heisman Trophy winner that people expected to see.

He’s going to be one of the top quarterbacks taken come draft time, but he’s shown that he can do more than just throw the football or run with it. He can also catch it and get some points on the board as a receiver. It was a beautifully designed football play that paid off big time.
