Tony Ferguson is looking to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor before moving up to welterweight.

With all the talk between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor over the last few days it can be easy to forget the UFC has another champion in the lightweight division. Tony Ferguson won the UFC lightweight interim title back in October and with it came the promise of a shot with the champion Conor McGregor. Although the return of the champ is unknown at this time, UFC president Dana White said himself that the fight between Ferguson and McGregor is the next fight to make.

Of course, that was before the return of Khabib Nurmagomedov threw a wrench in the 155-pound mix. Nurmagomedov, who has been absent from the UFC for a year made his return with a huge win over Edson Barboza this past weekend at UFC 219. Since the win, the Nurmagomedov and McGregor have been going back and forth with jabs on social media. However, the interim champ, Tony Ferguson is not will to sit by an allow his title shot to pass him by.

“Don’t care if the UFC approves, I’ll cut Conor McGregor,” Ferguson wrote on Twitter. “Drop Khabib Nurmagomedov and move up to welterweight either before or after I’m done with this division and rid it of the trash at the top. Pollution has accumulated over the years, time to clean house.”

Ferguson (23-3) is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury in which he recently underwent surgery. The UFC has mentioned that they would like to schedule McGregor’s return of the summer, by which time both Ferguson and Nurmagomedov would be eligible to fight. Another option might be having these two fight for a shot at McGregor upon his return. Ferguson is currently on one of the longest winning streaks in the UFC at 10 with five of his last seven victories coming by way of submission.
