The NFL playoffs are almost here and some of the premier quarterbacks in the game will be in action this Wild Card weekend.
This upcoming weekend is chock full of great matchups and a huge part of that is some of the biggest names in the game are set to take the national stage. The most important position on the football field is quarterback and some teams have a clear advantage this weekend. Even the lowest players on this list are still some of the best in the NFL but they face an uphill climb to advance to the Divisional Round next week.
The rankings are based not only on the play of the quarterback himself but the supporting cast around him, any injuries on the offensive side of the ball, and the difficulty of the matchup. There is an element of whether the quarterback can move on into the next round and how responsible he would be to make it happen. There’s going to be some great quarterback play this weekend even from the sixth seed in each conference. Wild Card weekend almost always seems to provide some good back and forth games and a potentially crazy upset. Some of the lower ranked players on this list could be instrumental in pulling that off.
8. Tyrod Taylor, Buffalo Bills
There seem to be very few people around the NFL that appreciates Tyrod Taylor as an actual NFL-caliber quarterback. He may not be an Aaron Rodgers or even a Cam Newton, but he is a legitimate top-16 option. That may not sound great but ask some of the teams looking for a quarterback if they would like to have Taylor. It’s fair to say he does have some limitations in his game and his matchup is clearly the worst of the eight this weekend.
Taylor and Buffalo must travel to Jacksonville, which had one of the best defenses in the NFL this year. On top of that, Taylor might be without running back LeSean McCoy due to a sprained ankle. Even if McCoy is on the field, he almost certainly won’t be 100 percent. Taylor will also be working with a below average receiving corps, just as he has all season long. His best option from a talent perspective is Kelvin Benjamin, who arrived via trade during the season and is playing with a torn meniscus.
The best chance Taylor has to lead an upset of the Jaguars is to make plays with his legs. This doesn’t even mean in the rushing department, this can be accomplished by just being nimble in the pocket. Jacksonville struggled at the end of their game with the Seahawks chasing around Russell Wilson. It’s possible that Taylor could play the same style and strike late to steal the game away.
