The ever-changing world of offensive and defensive coordinators in the NFL continued as the New York Jets dismissed John Morton.

All told, 2018 will mark the fourth consecutive season for general manager Mike Maccagnan and head coach Todd Bowles. But for the third straight year, the New York Jets will open a season with a new play-caller.

Last season, John Morton replaced Chan Gailey as the team’s offensive coordinator. Via Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, Morton won’t be back this upcoming season. The search is on for his replacement. It was one-and-out with the Green and White for the well-traveled assistant, who had enjoyed previous stints with the Oakland Raiders, San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints before joining the Jets in 2017.

Only four teams in the league gained fewer total yards per game this past season than Bowles’ club. This was one season after New York finished 26th in the NFL in total offense. The Jets scored 298 points and managed 32 offensive touchdowns in 2017. This was a slight improvement from the previous year (275 points, 26 offensive TD).

And the numbers might have been even better if veteran quarterback Josh McCown had not been injured in Week 14 at Denver. Regardless, The Jets totaled only 32 points in the final four games, all losses. All this came after the team managed a resounding 38-31 home victory over the eventual AFC West champion Kansas City Chiefs.

As for replacements, both Mehta and Fox’s Peter Schrager mentioned quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates. Schrager also suggested that former Steelers’ offensive coordinator Todd Haley and Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterbacks coach John John DeFillipo could be in the mix as well.
