2018 NFL Mock Draft: Giants land Sam Darnold
By Brad Weiss
The New York Jets actually had a better season than most could have predicted, and in the process, they likely saved head coach Todd Bowles’ job. Heading into the 2017 season, the Jets made wholesale changes up and down their roster, getting rid of a lot of their veteran talent. That led to most people figuring they were tanking so they could pick high in the 2018 NFL Draft, but the Jets players were not having any of that.
While they will pick early in round one, it was not because they tanked to get here. The organization brought in Josh McCown to do the quarterbacking this season, and he ended up having a career-year. He is not a long-term solution at the position, as he is one of the older players in the league, though he could stick around to mentor a guy like Josh Allen, who should be selected if he is still available at No. 6.
Allen played at Wyoming, so it is hard to judge him based on statistics, and his record. However, he does have all the physical attributes you look for in a young quarterback, and would be given a chance to sit a year if the team decided to bring back McCown. That time with the veteran would allow him to see how a professional prepares, and would actually go a long way in making him a better player down the road.
