I’m cycling through guys in this spot every week trying to decide who the most Spursy pick is. Porter fits the bill, capable of doing a little of everything and with just enough athleticism to survive in the modern NBA.
He could be similar to DeJuan Blair or Nazr Mohammed, two big men who ably filled their role next to Tim Duncan during the Spurs’ championship run. Porter is a passer, shooter, scorer, rebounder or rim protector depending on the moment. San Antonio has very little depth at this point, so they can always use talent like Porter.
The freshman has a .589 true shooting percentage thanks to above-average marks from both 2- and 3-point range. He also has a plus-25.5 net rating, helping Missouri to a 12-5 record even without Porter’s lottery-bond cousin Michael leaving the team early on with injury.
Porter is a different look than most Spurs big men, but sometimes outside the box can still mean drafting the most talented player available.
