MLB trade rumors: Brewers make offer for Christian Yelich

The Miami Marlins are in the midst of another firesale, and the next player out of town could be Christian Yelich.

The Miami Marlins have torn down their franchise once again, this time in the new Derek Jeter era. They have traded off the likes of Dee Gordon, Marcell Ozuna, and Giancarlo Stanton. Also, the team has axed its relationship with the fans, with significant subtractions instead of expected additions.

They have dealt off most of their tradeable assets, save for Yelich and J.T. Realmuto, the last two desperately want out of Miami. Teams have shown valued interest in both guys, but the Marlins want a big overpay for both. So, there hasn’t been much action for either of them until Monday afternoon, with Yelich voicing that he wants out of South Beach.

According to Craig Mish from Sirius XM, the Brewers have made an offer for Yelich, but warned that other teams remain in the loop too. This is somewhat surprising for a team that has built up the farm system over the past couple of seasons, but perhaps Milwaukee sees an opening in the NL Central. As a small-market team, it is very important to build from the ground up, but the Brewers are showing that they are serious about competing now and will pay up to get there.

For Milwaukee, Yelich is a controllable and affordable asset. The Marlins extended him with a 7-year, $49,570,000 contract in 2016. He is one of the best outfielders in the game on a miserable team. So while the Brewers will be giving up a ton if they ultimately get him, Yelich would blend right in with the youth in Milwaukee.

In 2017, the outfielder hit .282 with 18 home runs and 81 RBI. He accumulated a 4.5 WAR, which qualifies him as an All-Star caliber player. This is intriguing considering he isn’t even in the prime of his career yet.

Still, the Marlins are going to ask for the sun and moon for him. That is understandable, so the Brewers will be cautious of top prospects in a deal. The Braves would’ve needed to trade Ronald Acuna to get Yelich, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if top prospect Lewis Brinson is demanded.
