Offensive Tackle. Notre Dame. Mike McGlinchey. 9. player. 42.

Prior to the NFL trade deadline, the San Francisco 49ers swung a deal that could change the course of their franchise. During his time in New England, many though Jimmy Garoppolo would be a solid replacement if Tom Brady ever decided to retire, but that does not seem to be happening any time soon. The team ended up trading Jimmy G to the 49ers, and once he was inserted into the starting lineup, the team did not lose again.

As the 49ers head into next season, many believe they could end up being the team to beat in the NFC West. Garoppolo showed he can win with few weapons, and protecting him is going to be the priority moving forward. First, the team needs to sign him to a long-term deal, and then go out and put another big offensive tackle in front of him.

Joe Staley is a great player at left tackle, and has developed into one of the best at the position in the NFC. With pick No. 9, the 49ers may decide to bring in Mike McGlinchey from Notre Dame, who could be the team’s right tackle for as long as Staley decides to stay in the Bay Area. Having both Staley and McGlinchey would give Garoppolo two bookend tackles, and if the team does sign Garoppolo long-term, they will at least be protecting their best asset with this pick.
