2018 NFL mock draft: Baker Mayfield heads to Jets
By Brad Weiss
Prior to the trade deadline this season, the San Francisco 49ers swung a deal that may have saved their franchise. The 49ers traded with the New England Patriots to get Jimmy Garoppolo, a highly coveted player, who has backed up Tom Brady throughout his career. Once inserted into the starting lineup, Jimmy G showed why people are so high on him, winning all of his five starts to end the season.
Heading into the offseason, locking up Garopplo to a long-term deal is the No. 1 priority for general manager John Lynch. The next priority is getting him more weapons to throw to, and Coutrland Sutton from SMU might be a perfect fit in the Bay Area. Sutton has the physical attributes you look for in a wide receiver, and Garoppolo has shown he can win games with much less during his short 49ers career.
With the way they looked to end the season, San Francisco could be a team to beat next season if they can lock up Garoppolo. The addition of Sutton would give him a solid threat downfield, as well as a big strong receiver that can go over the middle. This team has a chance to make some noise in the NFC West next season, much like the Los Angeles Rams did in 2017, by going from the bottom of the division, to the top.
